HowToBasic is an Australian YouTube channel that gained notoriety in 2012 and 2013 for its bizarre instructional videos.
HowToBasic videos have been compared to the body horror in the work of David Cronenberg and the surrealism and scatological aesthetic of Marcel Duchamp.[2] They consist of supposed demonstrations of how to complete simple tasks, such as the videos "How to Tie a Shoelace" and "How To Stuff a Turkey", or sometimes more outlandish topics such as "How To Fight a Chicken" and "How To Arrest Justin Bieber". The videos commonly feature eggs, and other food.
They consist of supposed demonstrations of how to complete simple tasks, but the directions quickly decent into madness; commonly featuring the smashing of eggs and other food. Taken via a handheld video camera, mostly only the video maker's hands are seen, when more is shown, he is implied to be naked. He only speaks in indiscriminate grunting sounds.
The channel began in December 2011, with simple videos that had yet to feature the tropes that made the channel famous.
