English Lakes Hotels is a family run hotel group with six hotels in and around the Lake District region of the North West of England. English Lakes Hotels Limited was established 16th May 1979[1] however the hotel group has enjoyed an interesting and illustrious existence and each one has its own unique tales dating back until 25th December 1952 when Norman Buckley, great uncle of the present Chairman/Managing Director Simon Berry, purchased Low Wood Hotel. The most recent addition to English Lakes Hotels portfolio was the Midland Hotel in April 2009 [2]
Historical Highlights
[edit]- 25th December 1952, Norman Buckley purchased Low Wood Hotel.
- 8th August 1959, the Wild Boar Hotel was purchased.
- 20th October 1965, the Royal Hotel was purchased.
- 1969, the Wild Boar and Low Wood were increased in size considerably.
- 1st July 1975, the Waterhead Hotel was purchased.
- 16th May 1979, English Lakes Hotels Limited was established.
- August 1983, The Low Wood Watersports Centre was created.
- June 1989, major developments took place at Low Wood with the building of the Conference Centre and Leisure Club.
- 12th June 1991, Lancaster House Hotel (the companies first green field site build) was opened.
- 2002 English Lakes Hotels celebrated its 50th anniversary and to commemorate this and the tri-centenary of Low Wood, 1702 - 2002, Michael Berry launched his book 'A Sunlit, Intimate Gift… Low Wood on Windermere, Three Hundred Years of Lakeland History[3]'.
- April 2003, English Lakes Hotels announced the addition of Storrs Hall hotel to their portfolio.
- September 2004, Having been sold The Royal ceased trading.
- April 2009, English Lakes Hotels announced the addition of the Midland Hotel in Morecambe to their portfolio in a joint venture agreement with Urban Splash.
