About Me

[edit]

I was born in the Philippines, a country comprised of over 7000 islands[1] in the mid-sixties. Although my parents were Filipino, they were also U.S. citizens and spent much time working in the states and around the world. My mother was a teacher and my father was an engineer. I have three grown children, all in their twenties, and a young granddaughter. Over the years I taught college math and worked in I.T. for a large hotelier. Three years ago, I was visiting my cousin in Mukilteo and during that visit, I met my husband. You’ve heard of “90-day fiancée”? We only took 45 days. During my time in the states, I've worked at my husbands fermented foods business, but mostly I’ve done care giving for the elderly for work. I’m currently studying to get my American credentials for teaching math.

My Wikipedia Interests

[edit]

During my time here in the States my husband and I have traveled around the country and I often look up the places we go while on the road. I’ll also use Wikipedia to fact-check some of the things my husband says. I’m very interested in growing houseplants and gardening. I use Wikipedia to look up individual plant species and how to care for them.

Article Evaluation

[edit]

I visited the Heavenly Mountain Resort article on Wikipedia and found three aspects of it worth commenting on: Information and graphics left out that should be there, biased sources, and irrelevant content. I chose this subject because my husband and I visited the resort in March of this year. When I checked the Wikipedia page it seems to be lacking and in fact the article is tagged at the top “This article has multiple issues”.

Missing Information/Graphics

[edit]

The first thing I noticed was the lack of written and graphical content on the page. There is no specific information about ski runs or difficulty. No information about the different lodges on the mountain. No pricing information. No snowfall by year measurements. Very little history of the resort. There are very few photographs and NO TRAIL MAP.

Biased Sources

[edit]

I believe the sources to be biased as there are only 2 references cited. There was a CNN reference about Sonny Bono dying at the resort and a magazine article referenced concerning history or the resort. Links to the resort’s main website is not cited as a reference but is included in the article. Maybe these references are unbiased, but I believe there should be more than two.

Irrelevant Information

[edit]

I found irrelevant information in the article concerning lifts, location and other resorts. There is a paragraph listing the ski lifts which I find relevant, but they don’t need to name the builder of the lifts, it just confuses the reader. On the right-hand column of the article where it lists “location” there are multiple locations listed. They should have just left it as “south lake Tahoe”. Also irrelevant is a listing of other resorts owned by the parent company, Vail Resorts.

Conclusion

[edit]

We enjoyed our time at Heavenly very much, it’s a grand and stunningly beautiful place. It was a big disappointment to find its Wikipedia article so poor, but with some improvement it could represent the resort better. If someone took the time to trim out the irrelevant content, do some research and fill in the missing content it could be a fine article. And most importantly with a ski resort, include a trail map.
