Languess is an online language recognition game that allows users to explore and test their knowledge of languages from around the world using audio files. The game is heavily inspired by GeoGuessr, but instead of geography, players identify languages through audio clips. Languess uses audio data from the Mozilla Common Voice project.[1][2]
Features
[edit]Languess offers several game modes for users to explore and test their language recognition skills:
Explorer Mode
[edit]In Explorer Mode, users can freely browse and listen to recordings from a variety of languages and dialects. This mode is educational and non-competitive, allowing users to explore different languages and their regional accents without gameplay constraints.
Streak Game
[edit]The Streak Game challenges players to identify as many languages as possible in a row without making a mistake. Users can test their knowledge of global languages or focus on specific language dialects.
Classic Mode
[edit]Classic Mode functions similarly to GeoGuessr's classic mode, but instead of guessing geographical locations, players must guess which language is being spoken in the audio clip. Points are awarded based on how geographically close the guess is to where the language is spoken.[1]
Family Feud
[edit]In Family Feud, players are tasked with identifying the language family, subfamily, or specific branch based on an audio clip. The difficulty increases as players move from broad categories (e.g., Indo-European) to more specific subfamilies (e.g., Romance) and branches (e.g., East Slavic). This mode offers three difficulty levels: Easy, Medium, and Hard.[1]
Babel Brawl
[edit]Babel Brawl is a multiplayer battle royale mode where players compete to identify languages. Similar to GeoGuessr's battle royale mode, players are eliminated after making incorrect guesses, and the last player standing wins.[2]
Language Database
[edit]As of October 2024, Languess features:
- Audio Recordings: 22,619,532
- Dialects: 45
- Languages: 130
- Total Language Maps: 70
* Geographical Maps: 15 * Language Family Maps: 45 * Dialect Maps: 1 * Orthographic Maps: 8 * Miscellaneous Maps: 1
- Unique Voices: 315,949
- Unique Sentences: 10,397,545[1]
Technology
[edit]Languess is built using Python and the Django web framework. It uses Mozilla Common Voice's open-source audio data to populate its language and dialect recognition challenges.[2]
