Appendix 3: finding photos

[edit]

IN PROGRESS

  • Check for Commons files already in existence
  • iNaturalist – tool to import iNaturalist2Commons
  • Flickr

Provide links here to pages that are already on Commons – tools I have used frequently such as CropTool, the one for combining images (whatever it's called), etc.

The non-profit iNaturalist has a website with a searchable database of observations. Searching the on an accepted species name, usually the same as in Plants of the World Online, will return many photographs though not all of them will be of quality of the correct license to be used in Wikipedia. Using the filters provided by iNaturalist (top right of the page) can limit the results to just those that have been released under creative commons licenses. The three accepted at Wikimedia Commons are CC0 (not rights reserved), CC-BY (by attribution), and CC-BY-SA (by attribution with a share alike license). It is also sometimes important to limit the search to research grade observations, those where 2/3rd or more of users on iNaturalist agree that the photograph is of the named species, subspecies, or variety to ensure accuracy.

When uploading to Creative Commons use the {{INaturalistReview}} template in the other information field. This flags uploads to be checked by a bot for accuracy of the license and where the photo was found rather than requiring human review.
