Fraternities and Sororities at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is host to 17 national fraternity and sorority chapters. The greek system at North Carolina A&T is very selective, with roughly 1.4% of undergraduate male students and 1.2% of undergraduate female students involved in fraternities and sororities.

Fraternities and Sororities at N.C. A&T provide both social and service opportunities for students. As of 2013, the Office of Greek Life recognized Nine Fraternities and Seven Sororities that vary in scope from, social, service, honorary, and social fellowships that do not affiliate themselves with the traditional black greek movement.

Greek System

The greek system at North Carolina A&T is considered very selective with roughly 1.4% of undergraduate male students and 1.2% of undergraduate female students involved in fraternities and sororities. Active fraternities at NC A&T include Alpha Phi Omega, a national co-ed community service fraternity; Kappa Kappa Psi, a national honorary Band fraternity; and Pershing Rifles, is a military fraternal organization for college-level students: and social fraternities Phi Beta Sigma, Alpha Phi Alpha, Iota Phi Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Lambda Chi Alpha; Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a collegiate social fraternity for men with a special interest in music; Omega Psi Phi, and Groove Phi Groove. Active sororities at the university include Chi Eta Phi, a professional association for registered professional & student nurses; Tau Beta Sigma, a national honorary band sorority; and social sororities Alpha Kappa Alpha; Delta Sigma Theta; Zeta Phi Beta; Sigma Gamma Rho; and Swing Phi Swing.

Fraternities and Sororities at N.C. A&T are governed by either the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) or the Greek Lettered Council. The National Pan-Hellenic Council, collectively known as the "Divine Nine," is a collaborative organization of nine historically African American, international Greek lettered fraternities and sororities. The Greek Lettered Council serves as a governing body for the non-NPHC organizations and social fellowships.

's Greek Community consists of all nine of the Historically Black National Pan-Hellenic Council Fraternities and Sororities, as well as local social organizations, honor societies and professional organizations. In order to function on campus, these organizations are registered with The Office of Student Affairs, and are under the jurisdiction of one of NC A&T SU's three Greek governing councils. The Office of Student Affairs works closely with individual organizations in the development of their activities, community service programming, and Membership Intake Processes.

National Pan-Hellenic Council

Phi Beta Sigma (ΦΒΣ)

In 1915, the Eta Chapter (H) of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity was chartered by William S. Savage

Omega Psi Phi (ΩΨΦ)

In 1927, Mu Psi Chapter (MΨ) of Omega Psi Phi was established by Asa T. Spaulding, Henry Spruill, Waldo Faulkber and Warmouth T. Gibbs.

Alpha Phi Alpha (ΑΦΑ)

In March of 1929, the 49th chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha was established on the campus by Alpha brother Charles W. Greene. Eight students, known as the charter members, were initiated into the chapter: John L. Dickason, Jodie S. Hargrove, Cevera R. Little, Nolan Little, Ross W. Newsome, Walter E. Pitts, James R. Redding, and James E. Rowell.

Alpha Kappa Alpha (ΑΚΑ)

In 1932, the Alpha Phi Chapter (ΑΦ) of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority was chartered on the university's campus by eight students: Murnell Graves, Ruth Hull, Carrie Hill Kelly, Constance Hill Marteena, Marion Tatum, Vivian Walker, Josephine Barrier Ware, and Hattie Wright. During the 1931 school term, Graves learned of the national sorority from an on campus instructor by the name of Mrs. Hall. Hall later serve as the new chapter's first advisor. According to chapter history, In order to establish AKA on the college's campus, Graves had seek the permission of then president of the college, Mr. Ferdinand Bluford. After sucessfully convincing President Bluford to grant the sorority on campus, Graves recruited other ladies on campus to join her.

Delta Sigma Theta (ΔΣΘ)

In February of 1932, the Alpha Mu chapter (AM) of Delta Sigma Theta was chartered and incorporated on the campus of North Carolina A&T. The Alpha Mu Chapter was the first undergraduate chapter in the state of North Carolina, and only second to the previously established city-wide chapter in Durham,NC. Seven students were initiated into the chapter: Druella Galloway, Hattie Diffay, Martha White, Zena Bluford, Oveta Brown, Pearl Parker, and Hazel Whitlock.

Zeta Phi Beta (ZΦB)

In July of 1934, the Zeta Alpha chapter (ZA) of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority was chartered by Ten students.

Sigma Gamma Rho (ΣΓΡ)

In 1951, the Gamma Chapter (Γ) of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority was established by Six Students: Barbara Jackson, Frances Andrew, Beulah Mitchell, Mildred Jackson, Lottie Massenburh, and Rosa Gay.

Iota Phi Theta (IΦΘ)

In 1969, the Zeta Chapter (Z) of Iota Phi Theta was established by Nineteen students: Bertram Hayes, Leslie Roberts, Kendall Woods, Allen Whitehead, Melvin Walden, Ronnie Smith, Johnnie Wilson, Charlie McNair, Bruce Hunter, Vincent Banks, Kenneth Phillips, David Dublin. Wendell Parker, and Oscar Crowder, DeNard Ward, Rick Pettyford, William Roame, Gerald Watkins, and Archie Ford. According to the article in the A&T Register, the school's student newspaper, that announced the new fraternity's arrival, the students pledged under the guidance of the Beta Chapter at Hampton Institute and initiated by members of the fraternity's Alpha Chapter at Morgan State College.

Greek Lettered Council

Alpha Phi Omega (ΑΦΩ)

On February 13, 1953 the Kappa Psi (KY) Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega was chartered on the campus of North Carolina A&T.

Swing Phi Swing (SΦS)

In the Spring of 1971, the Aggie Chapter of Swing Phi Swing Social Fellowship was established by 27 female students. The chapter continued operations for the next two decades until the chapter membership was depleted in the mid 1990's. In 2011, with the assistance of graduate and other undergraduate members of the organization, the Aggie chapter was reactivated on campus on April 2, 2012.

Kappa Kappa Psi (ΚΚΨ)

In 1990, the Iota Zeta Chapter (IZ) of Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity was established by 19 members of the university marching band.

Defunct Organizations

Greek organizations at North Carolina A&T that dissolved over the years have largely done so as a result of financial difficulties, Revocation of chapter charter, or critically low membership and interest.

Esquire Service Fellowship

In 1969, the Esquire Service Fellowship was founded on the campus of N.C. A&T The organization aimed at enhancing the progress of the urban and university communities while enhancing the prestige of the university by showing young men that exhibited the most refined personalities.

Gamma Tau (ΓΤ)

Gamma Tau was founded as a national organization in 1934, on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C..

Kappa Alpha Psi (KAΨ)

In 1933, the Alpha Nu Chapter (AN) of Kappa Alpha Psi was chartered. Alpha Nu was the 36th chapter of the national organization.

Iota Phi Lambda (IΦΛ)

The Delta Theta Chapter of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority was chartered on May 23, 1946. By the late 1950's the organization was no longer active on campus.

Lambda Chi Alpha (ΛΧΑ)

In 2004, the Pi Iota Chapter (ΠΙ) of Lambda Chi Alpha was chartered on the campus. This marked the first multi-cultural social fraternity on the campus and the first chapter of the Organization on a Historically Black College or University.
