[edit]Robert and Mabel Stephenson had five children, and there were several Robert Stephensons in the family:

- James Stephenson, (b. 1779) who was an early locomotive driver.
- George Stephenson, who had one son:
- Robert Stephenson, (b. 1803) who built on the achievements of his father.
- Eleanor (Nelly) (b. 1784) looked after Robert when he was a child before marrying Stephen Liddell.
- Robert Stephenson (b. 1788) worked for George surveying railways before becoming a colliery manager. He had one son:
- George Robert Stephenson, (b. 1819) who inherited the Robert Stephenson & Co. locomotive works on Robert's death.
- John Stephenson (b. 1789) worked at Robert Stephenson & Co., and died in an accident at work leaving a large family.
- Anne Stephenson (b. 1792) married John Nixon, emigrated to the U.S., and left six children.
