Overview

[edit]

The Council on East Asian Libraries Statistics is a committee of the Council on East Asian Libraries (CEAL), which in turn is a committee of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS). CEAL members are library professionals, staff, and students who are specialized in East Asian studies librarianship and related information skills. CEAL members come from more than 70 institutions of varying sizes, libraries, museums, or are independent researchers and retired library professionals living in North America. Many of these institutions have participated in the CEAL member libraries annual online statistics input since 2000. CEAL Statistics Database contains statistical data-sets regarding East Asian library and museum collection holdings, staffing, service, and budget, collected annually from CEAL member libraries.[1][2][3] "CEAL Statistics" is an annual statistical data report which includes data specific to East Asian collections containing materials in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages, as well as print, multi-media, and electronic resources. The data reflects the number of additional volumes added to collections, the number of serial titles in print and ejournal format, collection resources in other formats, electronic materials, fiscal support (including funds through grants), personnel staffing, and services at these institutions.[4][5]

History

[edit]

The CEAL started as the Committee on American Library Resources on the Far East (CALFRE) when it was first established in 1958.[6][7] Starting in late 1980s, CEAL statistics data has been disseminated each year via the Journal of East Asian Libraries (JEAL). Currently, the online database houses CEAL statistics data from 1957 to present-day. The CEAL Statistics Committee is based at the University of Kansas.[8]

Goals

[edit]

The aims of CEAL are to 1) discuss relevant issues, 2) expand and organize EA-related resources, services, and data, and 3) build relationships between libraries both domestically and internationally.[9] The mission of CEAL statistics is to 1) produce, preserve, and publish data on libraries that are members of CEAL, and 2) Encourage member libraries to gather and use collection data.[10]

Access

[edit]

To create a user-friendly system, Quick Views, Simple Search, Advanced Search, PDF, and Log-in Views have been integrated into the database. CEAL members may filter the data by library type and geographical region to access specific data and rankings for collection characteristics, services, costs, and funding. Data from CEAL Statistics is incorporated into the annual statistics of the Association of Research Libraries.[11]
