Evany Jose Metzker was tortured, scalped, and then beheaded. Records state that Metzker had been investigating political corruption, child prostitution, and drug dealing. In Metzker's blog, 'Coruja de Vale (The Owl of the Valley)' he often reported on corrupt officials and politicians. His body was found near Padre Paraiso in Minas Gerais. Metzler had been working on a series of stories in Jequitin Honha valley which is known as one of Brazil's poorest regions. His body was missing for five days before police found him. Records state that Metzler's family received an anonymous tip where they could find his remains. Reporters say that "his hands were tied behind his back and his body showed signs of torture". However, the coroner was unable to establish the cause of death. According to police Metzker had received many death threats during his career. At least fourteen Brazilian journalists have been killed since 2001 in retaliation for their work. Brazil is the third most dangerous country for journalist in Latin America, after Mexico and Colombia. Metzker's wife stated "There are lots of murders here. I think the motive, given the barbarity of his murder, was because he hit on something". Metzker's union demanded a rigorous investigation be had, after the discovery of his death. Evany Jose Metzker was warned that he ran a risk investigating drug trafficking and child prostitution in this very violent region. Local journalists said they were afraid to work in the region. "There is a climate of terror in the region that intimidates reporters from doing their job," the president of the Minas Gerais journalist union, Kerison Lopes, said.
