Career

[edit]

Exum started his internet career on the webcasting service YouNow, where he gained more than 1,000 followers. In August 2014, he began uploading comedy videos on Vine, where he amassed a following of over 650,000 users before the app was discontinued. His most popular video on Vine, When you get your report card and you know your grades are bad, had more than 5 million views. After Vine, he uploaded his first video to YouTube, The Mom Rap, in August of 2016. The video went viral and has nearly 14 million views.[5] He also uploads shorter comedy videos to TikTok, where he has more than 6 million followers and 160 million total likes.[3]

Content

[edit]

Exum's videos mainly revolve around a teenager named Kyle who attempts to juggle family life and school work- with little success. Common events that take place are Kyle's parents assigning him ridiculous amounts of chores, Kyle receiving poor school report cards, and his younger brother Timmy annoying him. His videos are usually 3-5 minute comedy skits, original rap songs, and parodies of popular songs. With a few exceptions, Exum is the only actor in all of his videos, wearing different outfits and using a slightly different pitched voice for each character. All of the characters have extremely stereotypical traits for a comedic effect. His 4 most popular videos on YouTube, all of which each have more than 15 million views, are all parodies of popular songs: Dad's Plan (God's Plan), Mama Mode (Sicko Mode), Old Belt Road (Old Town Road), and Lucid Dreams Parody.[6] Among his most popular original songs are Trap 3 Little Pigs[7] (which he created into a children's book)[8] and TikTokin'.

His videos feature many recurring characters, including:

  • Kyle, a teenage boy who tries to be good, but usually has an excessive workload of chores and homework to do.
  • Timmy, Kyle's younger brother. Timmy is a troublemaker who stops at nothing to annoy Kyle and never gets blamed for any wrongdoing, with Kyle usually taking the punishment. To give the illusion of Timmy being younger, Exum, along with wearing a backward baseball cap, portray's Timmy's character on his knees to reduce his height.
  • Mom, Kyle's mother. Mom gives Kyle endless chores to do, many of them being outrageous, such as sweeping the ceilings and the roof, cleaning the grass, and even cleaning the neighbor's house. While she assigns many chores for Kyle, she almost never gives Timmy any and is rarely seen doing any herself. When Kyle questions her, she typically resorts to "whooping" him with her belt. She normally wears a black shirt and a red bandana on her head.
  • Eardle, Kyle's father, who is normally just known as Dad. Eardle, like Kyle's mom, often orders Kyle to do excessive chores, but often doesn't want to enforce them until Mom convinces him.
  • Grandpa, Kyle's grandfather. Grandpa is known to be very old and, although he claims to be 80 in The Grandpa vs. Grandma Rap Battle, he is believed to be over 250 years old as he was personal friends with Beethoven.
  • Kyle (2090), Kyle in the year 2090. 2090 Kyle bears a great resemblance to Grandpa. He often tries to explain to his grandson, also named Kyle, what life was like in 2020.
  • Various Teachers, teachers at Kyle's school. Mr. Johnson is Kyle's most frequent teacher, but there is also Mr. Scott and Mr. Drip, the substitute teacher. All of the teachers have outrageous grading methods, including subtracting 50% from the final grade of an essay for not indenting the paragraphs.
  • Girlfriend, Kyle's girlfriend. The unnamed girlfriend is extremely possessive of Kyle and becomes overcome with jealousy if he converses with any other girl, including his own grandma and mother. She normally wears a shower cap to give her a more feminine appearance.
  • Nyle, the middle child of the family.
