Gath Hepher ( Hebrew: גת חפר), also known as Gath Ha Hepher, is a town mentioned twice in the Tanach ( Old Testament). It is listed in Joshua 19.15 as part of the land allocated to the tribe of Zebulun and again in 2 Kings 14. 25 as the birthplace of Jonah the prophet. The meaning of "Gath" is a wine press, and "Hepher" a well or a pit and where "Ha" is inserted this is the definite article "the". Today it is an Arab city Mashhad found between Nazareth and Tiberias. The Arabic name, meaning "grave of a holy man", reflects the belief that this was the place of both the birth and burial of Jonah.
