User:Durova/List of most needed featured articles

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The List of most needed featured articles correlates three sets of information. Candidates were selected from Wikipedia:Most visited articles in descending order. Each was surveyed for two criteria: at least 20 different language versions of Wikipedia must have an article on the subject and none of those articles are featured. The list that follows describes the top 50 results.

History

[edit]

When I nominated Joan of Arc for Wikipedia:Featured article candidates I mentioned that the article is among the top 0.5% of Wikipedia's most visited articles, according to User:Dcoetzee/List of Wikipedia articles with at least 1000 hits. This prompted some curiosity from other editors and an interest in identifying other popular articles for improvement. 42 different language editions had a featured article about Joan of Arc, but none of those articles were featured.

Purpose

[edit]

This identifies high profile articles of broad international interest for improvement. It focuses on articles without a featured version in any language in order to avoid overlap withWikipedia:WikiProject Echo, which encourages featured article translations.

Shortcomings

[edit]

Wikipedia:Most visited articles was last updated on June 23, 2005. The 20 language minimum for inclusion is an arbitrary standard. This list was compiled by hand counting language editions, which could introduce slight errors. Furthermore it is possible (although unlikely) that a featured article notation failed to appear during the survey due to a slow download. Most of these articles are high level topics and therefore difficult to cover well in a short article. A few of the entries appear idiosyncratic or are lists that may not offer much room for improvement. Durova 19:30, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
