The Parliament of Yemen is the bicameral legislature of the Republic of Yemen. It comprises the House of Representatives, which is the originator of most legislation, and the Shura Council, which serves mainly as an advisory body.
History
[edit]Prior to unification in 1990, the territory of modern Yemen was split between two states: the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (commonly known as South Yemen), which controlled what was formerly the Aden Protectorate of the United Kingdom, and North Yemen, which controlled the former Yemen Vilayet of the Ottoman Empire.[1] Each of these nations had its own respective legislature: South Yemen's was the Supreme People's Council, and North Yemen's was known as the Shura Council (a name which would be adopted by unified Yemen's upper house).[2]
