Beyond Radio is the Community Radio Station for Lancaster & Morecambe and launched on 30th July 2016. The station broadcasts across the district on 103.5 FM. The Beyond Radio project was developed by Proper Community Media (Lancaster) Ltd, a not for profit community group and company limited by guarantee in May 2012. This followed the closure of Diversity FM, the previous community radio station which had operated from 2006 to 2012. Proper Community Media(Lancaster)Ltd was established by former employees of Diversity FM along with former board members of Chorley FM, another community radio station in Lancashire, with the intention of applying for an 5 year Ofcom community radio licence.
In the run up to the application round opening up for the north Lancashire regions PCM(L)Ltd, established an internet only station and began music based broadcasts from a studio set up in the basement of one of the board members homes on Balmoral Road in Lancaster. It was from here the staion broadcasted a mix of automated and live content until the establishment of the current studio at The Old Bowling Pavilion in Palatine Avenue park in Bowerham Lancaster and the move to FM/internet simulcasting.
On the launch day of 30th July 2016 the staion went live at 10.35am (as a nod to the frequency of 103.5FM) playing Thin Lizzy's The Boys Are Back In Town as the first song under the live FM transmission status. The station received over 14,000 facebook interactions in the first few hours.[1]
