About Me
[edit]New to the WikiVerse, I am a faculty member in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of the Pratt School of Engineering at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. I was also an undergraduate there, earning a BSE, MS, and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and a BSE in Electrical Engineering.
Projects
[edit]I've created a few pages:
- Admiral Frank Bowman - Duke alum and retired four star admiral
- Rondo - only the best soft drink ever
- Moira Cameron - the first female Yeoman Warder
I try to keep track of Duke's page, Pratt's page, and a couple others. I can't wait to retire in 30 or 40 years so I can work on more.
My main wiki based projects are working on two other wikia: Duke Wiki as well as my Pratt Pundit site.
Ribbon Checker
[edit]One of my bigger projects was making ribbon checkers for the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard:
And now I see that Wikipedia can do ribbon bars! Mine would be:
Update 8/7/2009: However, the template does some things incorrectly for Navy / Marine Corps / Coast Guard ribbons. Specifically:
- "V" devices on N/MC/CG ribbons are centered, while on DoD / Army / Air Force ribbons the are inboard.
- Stars for multiple awards on N/MC/CG ribbons are placed such that any silver stars (5 awards) are central, while on DoD / Army / Air Force ribbons silver oak leaves are inboard.
So...got some work to do.
Acknowledgments
[edit]- Thanks to WillMak050389 for the welcome and...for the fact that I, erm, borrowed a lot of the code from his user and talk pages to make mine. Though - I did rework the images and whatnot in the boxes at right, and am fairly proud of the fact that I could code Duke Blue and Navy Blue in the appropriate places.
Random
[edit]Mistakes Made So Far
[edit]- Added alumni to the bottom of the Duke University page that, while important, should have been added to the List of Duke University people rather than the page itself. Points for the fix go to Bluedog423.
- Used fair-use images on my user page. Note the pictures for Duke and Pratt above at right are pictures of the campus and not images of logos. Logos are fair use, versus not having a copyright. Points for the fix (and the full explanation)go to Durin.
- Added a "support" to an apparently archived Request for comment. This is, when I clicked over to the RfC, the page skipped to the middle so I didn't see the bright shiny letters that said "Please do not modify." Not sure how to fix that one... My guess is either points for the fix or points for a deserved nastygram will also go to Durin. Update: I went and learned how to revert a page, thus eliminating...myself...from that RfC. Points go to me.
- We'll see if my adds of a couple of the So You Think You Can Dance folks end up being mistakes or not... Update:some stayed, others were merged, none destroyed entirely.
- New one in October of 2007 - put a vandal warning on a mainspace page using a user's name instead of the user's page. Humorously, the speedy-delete tag was placed on it virtually before the page was reloaded.
People I Know Who Know Me With Wikipedia Pages
[edit]This section is, basically, wikiname-dropping. Just thought it would be fun, so here goes - I am only including people who might reasonably be able to pick me out in a crowd...if I were to shave my beard: Andrew Baldwin, Adrian Bejan, Frank Bowman, KC Johnson, Kristina M. Johnson, Henry Petroski, and E. Roy Weintraub.
Awards
[edit]Giving is better than receiving...
