Atlas Leopard
[edit]The Atlas leopard or barbary leopard is a populotian of African leopard that live in North Africa. They live in the Atlas Moutains where the climate is cold.
Characteristics
[edit]The Barbary leopard's coat color varies from pale yellow to black. The Barbary Leopard's coat is thick because the place where it lives is cold. The Barbary Leopard is Sexual dimorphism; males are larger and heavier than females. According to Alfred Edward Pease, black leopards in North Africa were as big as lions. An Algerian leopard killed in 1913 was reported to have measured approximately 8 ft 10 in (2.69 m), before being skinned.
That means the average weight of a Barbary leopard's is greater than than conresponding groups further south. The mass of the largest was 225 kg (496lbs), the mean being 188kg (414 lbs), while the largest weighed weighed 152kg (335lbs), the mean was 126kg (277 lbs).
Distribution and habitat
[edit]The barbary leopard lives in Morroco and Algeria. They live in the Atlas mountains, in forest and mountain steppe in elevations of 300 to 2,500 m (980 to 8,200 ft), where the climate is temperate to cold. In 2014, a leopard was killed in the Elba Protected Area in southeastern Egypt. The barbary used to live with Atlas bear and the Barbary lion.
Ecology and behavior
[edit]Barbary leopards are generally most active between sunset and sunrise. They hunt Barbary macaque and Barbary sheep.
Threats
[edit]The animals that posed a threat to the are the Atlas bear and the Barbary lion. Now that they're extinct, they don't pose a threat anymore but the major threat the barbary leopard faces are humans. Humans kill them for their skin. Trophy hunting also affected their population. The Barbary leopard is endangered. There are less than 250 individuals left in the wild.
