Thomas North (1810/1811 – 28 February 1868) was a British businessman and mine owner in Nottingham, England. North also served a single term as Mayor of Nottingham in 1844.

Mine owner

In 1841, North leased land at Cinderhill owned by the Duke of Newcastle.

By 1856, North was the owner, by lease, of several coalfields. Such was the extent of the leases, North owned nearly ten thousand acres of coalfield across Nottinghamshire.

Death and legacy

Thomas North died on the 28 February 1868, aged 57.

Inspired by the opportunities North had afforded to the local community, employees of North's pits raised funds to construct a monument in his honour. The monument, in the form of an obelisk, was constructed within the cemetery at Old Basford, and was transcribed as follows:

By great enterprize he was the means of finding employment for a large number of people who have subscribed to erect this monument to his memory.
