The Hanoi Metro is a proposed rapid transit network that will serve Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. Most of the network is currently in the planning stages, with projects for different lines advancing as funds become available.
History
[edit](how did it start, etc, a little about old light rail systems in Hanoi would be nice too)
Hanoi Urban Metro (Hanoi Metro) is a metro rail system that will be introduced to Hanoi, Vietnam, by 2020. The project is part of an integrated development programme for urban transport in Hanoi and will provide a safe, efficient and clean urban transportation system. It is the fourth-biggest project in Vietnam to utilise the Japanese Government’s official development assistance capital.
Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam and the country's second-largest city, with a population of about six million. Many trains, including services to Hai Phong and Ho Chi Minh City, depart from Hanoi station. The Union Express travels from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, stopping at cities and towns along the route.
Commuters in Hanoi use motorbikes, buses, taxis and bicycles. The metro project is part of the Vietnam Ministry of Transport's master plan, which aims to reduce the use of private transport and enhance the urban environment.[1]
Network plan
[edit]Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyễn Tấn Dũng approved an overall transport development plan for Hanoi in July 2008, carrying development out to 2020, by which time Hanoi will be expected to have five metro routes.[2] The project is being carried out by the Hanoi Metropolitan Rail Transport Project Board (HRB), previously known as the Hanoi Authority for Tram and Public Transport Development Management (HATD).[1] As of spring 2009, projects for four lines were under consideration (see Table 1): the Nho–Hanoi Railway Station (the "pilot" line), the Nam Thang Long–Tran Hung Dao line, the Cat Linh–Ha Dong line, and the Yen Vien–Ngoc Hoi line. The Nho–Hanoi Railway Station, Cat Linh–Ha Dong and Yen Vien–Ngoc Hoi lines are currently in the research phase.[3] Technical studies of the system were expected to be completed in 2009.[1] Tsuno Motonori, representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), confirmed that the Nam Thang Long–Tran Hung Dao line would begin construction in mid-2011, to be completed in 2014 for full operation by 2016.[3]

Nho–Hanoi Railway Station line
[edit]Pilot line
currently in the research phase
According to the scheme, a viability survey will be made for the 15.2-kilometer route through the city's major districts: Tay Ho, Cau Giay, Ba Dinh, Hoan Kiem, Hai Ba Trung, Dong Da, Thanh Xuan, and Tu Liem.
The line will have 14 stations at which six-car trains will be scheduled to depart every 3.25 minutes. The service is expected to transport 575,000 passengers a day.
The pilot line between Nhon depot and Hanoi station will start at Nhon and travel to Cau Giay via National Highway 32, Ho Tung Mau and Xuan Thuy. It will also pass through Kim Ma, Nui Truc and Quoc Tu Giam.
The feasibility study for a Hanoi metro pilot route / line was completed in October 2005 and design of the pilot line started in 2007. The pilot route will be an east-westbound line and will connect 12 stations in the city with Hanoi station and Nhon depot.
The 12.5km-long pilot line will incorporate a 5.5km single track U-viaduct and a 4km twin tunnel structure. The system will include elevated and underground sections. About 9.6km will be elevated and 2.9km will be underground. It will utilise 20m-long metro trains that run at 80km/h.
International consulting engineers HRB and SYSTRA signed two contracts to construct the pilot line. Each contract is worth €36m and the total cost of the pilot line will be about €500m.
SYSTRA will assist with the commissioning, launch and operation of the service and will supervise the construction and manufacture of rolling stock. It also provided design studies and assessed bids.
The metro's infrastructure will include a viaduct, an underground section, stations, a depot and rolling stock maintenance centre and power supply stations.[1]
Alstom, the maker of France's high-speed TGV trains, earlier proposed technical and management solutions for a pilot subway in the capital city of Hanoi, which links the city's suburban Nhon township with the Hanoi Railway Station.

The prime minister approved the pre-feasibility research of the Nhon – Hanoi Railway Station route. This project has a total investment of VND 19 trillion (over US $1.11 billion) and is expected to be approved by the Hanoi People’s Committee this first quarter.
The route has a total length of 12.5km, with 9.6km overhead and 2.9km underground rail and eleven overhead and four underground stations. This route will use twenty metre metro trains, which can reach 80km per hour.
The route will start from Nhon through National Highway 32, Ho Tung Mau, Xuan Thuy, Cau Giay, Kim Ma, Nui Truc, Quoc Tu Giam, and the Hanoi Railway Station. [2]
Nam Thang Long–Tran Hung Dao line
[edit]The network's first line first metro route in 2014 This 11.5km route will run from Nam Thang Long residential area to Tran Hung Dao street. 3.5km will be overhead and 8km underground rails. This project has a total capital of JPY14.688 billion from the Japanese government’s soft loan (interest rate of 0.2% per year), for 40 years, with a grace period of 10 years. Tsuno Motonori said if everything goes smoothly, especially site clearance, construction will be kicked off in mid-2011 and finish in late 2014. The route will be tested for over one year and will be put into operation in January 2016.[3]
The route connecting Nam Thang Long and Tran Hung Dao will be 11.54km long and have ten stations. The line will include an 8.55km underground section.[1]
The construction of line two will begin in 2011 and expected to be completed by the end of 2014. The line will start operating after the testing period, in January 2016.[1]
Cat Linh–Ha Dong line
[edit]currently in the research phase
The route connecting Cat Linh and Ha Dong will travel from Cat Linh to Thai Thinh via Hao Nam and Hoang Cau. From Thai Thinh the line will move towards National Highway 6, connecting Nga Tu So, Nguyen Trai, Tran Phu and Quang Trung.
The line connecting Cat Linh and Ha Dong will be 13km long and have about 12 stations.[1]
The building of the Cat Linh – Ha Dong metro route will begin in the first quarter of 2009 while Hanoi authorities are considering the construction of the Nhon – Hanoi Railway Station route.
According to a report of the Transport Minsitry, the investor of the Cat Linh – Ha Dong metro will be the Vietnam Railway Administration, with initial investment capital of VND 5.3 trillion (over US $311 million). However, the capital was increased to over VND 8.7 trillion (over US $511 million). The Deputy Prime Minister authorized to use an additional US $100 million in China’s soft loan in this project.
The Cat Linh – Ha Dong route is around 13km with twelve overhead stations. The route will start from Cat Linh, in front of Horizon Hotel, through Hao Nam, Hoang Cau, Thai Thinh 1, Nga Tu So, Nguyen Trai, Tran Phu, Quang Trung, National Highway 6, and the new Ha Dong coach station.[2]
Yen Vien–Ngoc Hoi line
[edit]currently in the research phase The Yen Vien – Ngoc Hoi invested by the Vietnam Railway Corporation, approved by the Transport Ministry in late-2008, is the largest metro route in Hanoi with a length of 25km. The investor is organizing bids to choose consultants. The construction will begin in early 2012. Japan promised to assist the construction of the Yen Vien – Ngoc Hoi route.[2]
