Dr Thobani Makhaza is a well- known public figure in South Africa for his excellent work in uplifting the disadvantaged and changing lives. He shot into fame through his R1 initiative. The R1 program identifies needy students and offers them bursaries to further their studies. The R 1 initiative was founded and successfully launched 12 years ago. It takes 4000 students per year from all the 9 provinces of South Africa and offers them the tools to achieve their goals through education. In the 12 years of its existence, the program has seen 1666000+ disadvantaged students achieving their goals of enrolling in tertiary level through the R1 donated by community members across the country.The program is run under his brainchild, MEYO (Mind Empowers Youth Organization), an organization by the youth of South Africa, for the youth of South Africa. The organization started out as one’s dream to see South Africa transform into the first world status, today millions and millions of South Africans are beneficiaries. MEYO is growing tremendously with over a million members and continuing to grow exponentially.
