ANTHONY WHITE

Anthony White is an American-born, award-winning professional jazz saxophonist and musical director of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Marching Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Drum Line and Color Guard.

Under his direction and guidance the student bands have played numerous prestigious events including performing at the White House for former First Lady Michelle Obama, The Kennedy Center, The Playboy Jazz Festival and annually at the Pasadena Rose Parade.

He has won an outstanding Soloist Award from the National Association of Jazz Educators, a Humanitarian Award from the Omni Youth Music Awards and was the recipient of the Bravo Award Finalist and Fulfillment Fund.

THE TONY WHITE PROJECT

White's CD, The Tony White Project was released to critical acclaim in 2003.[1] The music concentrated on White's jazz stylings accompanied by popular smooth jazz group Minority Report and was produced by Billy Mitchell.

As a solo performer, he has played with jazz greats including the late Buddy Collette, Poncho Sanchez, and Lionel Hampton.

EDUCATION

White, a Los Angeles native, began his musical training early and studied at Charles Drew Middle School. When further musical training wasn't readily available at his local high school, he transferred out of the area to Narbonne High School in Harbor City, CA where he joined the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) All-City Marching Band.

After graduation, he continued his studies at the University of California, Riverside, and his volunteering with the band, driving home to Los Angeles each weekend. He received his teaching credentials from California State University, Dominguez Hills and later completed his Masters' in Public School Administration from Pepperdine University.

Highly concerned about the declining funding for school music programs, he has devoted his time to philanthropic activities and is the coordinator for the Beyond the Bell program, which develops and maintains visual and performing arts programs within LAUSD. As a coordinator, he also works with the Grammy Foundation, Henry Mancini Institute, Thelonious Monk Institute, Congressional Awards, Latino Art Beat, The Harmony Project, and former Tonight Show bandleader, Kevin Eubanks among others.

He recently was signed to promote Eastman Music Company saxophones,[2] while planning his next CD, due in 2013.
