The Type 8 LRV is a low-floor light rail vehicle built by AnsaldoBreda, operating on the MBTA Green Line in Greater Boston. The Type 8 cars were ordered by the MBTA in 1996 to replace its fleet of Boeing LRVs, and 95 cars were built from 1998 to 2007. They operate on all branches of the Green Line, often assembled into two-car trains with Type 7 cars.

Background

[edit]

The Green Line is a light rail system in Greater Boston, Massachusetts, serving the city's western and northern inner suburbs via Downtown Boston. The Green Line's four branches use infrastructure that is descended from the Boston streetcar system, with portions of the system dating back to 1897. As part of a modernization program in the 1970s, the MBTA purchased a fleet of US Standard Light Rail Vehicles (Boeing LRV) built by Boeing Vertol, which proved to be unreliable. The cars continued in service following the introduction of the Kinki Sharyo Type 7 in the 1980s, and the MBTA sought a full replacement of the fleet.
