nitro touring car new article content ... The class was introduced by Serpent, then a specialist in nitro on-road cars, when they had to face up to the successes of the electric touring car class, that was invented by Tamiya in 1991. Thus as a result, they introduced the Impulse

Because of it's high speed and the cost to compete at any level, it felt it needed a feeder class. The result was Serpent's Michael Salven designed Impact in 1993 that was 235mm-wide and commonly was 2WD; essentially a 1:10 equivalent of the 1:8 chassis. Many manufacturers tried to build similar cars with limited success which meant this and the popularity of the electric touring car class, created by Tamiya, forcing them to create it's nitro equivalent, the Impulse in 2000, which eventually killed the class.[1]
