Ronald L. Jackson II

Ronald L. Jackson II (born 1970), a professor of communication, culture, and media, served as Dean of the McMicken College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Cincinnati from 2012-2013. He is currently professor and award winning author, and was recently noted as a nominee for Comic-Con International's prestigious Eisner Award for his 2013 co-edited (with Sheena Howard) book Black Comics: Politics of Race and Representation.

Dr. Jackson is one of only three African American deans in the history of the University of Cincinnati since its founding in 1819. He is the first and only African American dean of the McMicken College of Arts & Sciences, the largest college at the University of Cincinnati with a student population of 8,000 and over faculty totaling over 500. In just one and a half years Dr. Jackson and his administration reduced the budget deficit of $7M to $2.5M and fine-tuned the climate by prioritizing student success, faculty excellence, and staff productivity.

EDUCATION Jackson is a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, which compelled him to accept the position of Dean. He graduated from Covington Latin High School, then proceeded to earn his B.A. in communication and M.A. in organizational communication from the University of Cincinnati before going on to complete his Ph.D. at Howard University in rhetoric and intercultural communication.

His research explores how identities are affected during intercultural and cross-cultural interaction. He further developed the concept of identity negotiation and conceived of three theories, which he coined "cultural contracts theory, " "scripting," and "Black masculine identity theory." An author of 14 books and nearly 75 publications, Dr. Jackson has mentored thousands of students, and served on almost 50 dissertation and thesis committees. He has served on 16 editorial boards ad reviewed for a dozen others. Among the grantors of research awards, fellowships, and commendations he has received are the National Communication Association, American Library Association, Comic-Con International, and Penn State University.

Dr. Jackson has held tenured faculty appointments at Penn State University, University of Illinois, and now University of Cincinnati. He holds life memberships in the National Communication Association, International Communication Association, Eastern Communication Association, Western States Communication Association, Central States Communication Association, and Southern States Communication Association.
