I plan to discard this after it has fulfilled its purpose.
Food for thought:
WP:BLP is a joke, and the perfect example of this is in the hilarious, factually-incorrect GamerGate article. In this controversial piece, many editors have sanitized the text for any instances of potential libel of notable detractors of the consumer revolt. Regardless of whether or not the allegations regarding these personalities are true (which is an interesting story itself) this policy has not been extended to the other involved party. This party, of course, are the gamers who use the hashtag. Throughout the Wiki article, GamerGate is portrayed as a movement dedicated to harassing females and sending death threats. Now, stop and think for a second. There are many people tweeting the hashtag using their real name. It is very easy imagine how some could have their name muddied by association from reading this disaster of an article. Now, I’m sure you’re thinking something along the lines of: “well, it has been attributed to GamerGate in multiple reliable sources, so it’s okay.” Normally, I would agree, but there’s something particularly interesting when it comes to this incident. If you notice, every single source is unable to name a single person (either by name or by handle) that is partaking in this alleged harassment. Heck, not a single one of these sources even contains harassment or threats using the hashtag, with the exception of a single harasser that was identified by GamerGate supporters and reported to the authorities. The reason for this is simple. The misogyny angle is a lie, and if the press so much as tries to call out someone by name, they will undoubtedly be brought to court for libel. Surely, if GamerGate was what the Wiki article paints it to be, there should be mountains of undisputable evidence of this harassment over the 5+ months since its inception. Here we find ourselves in a predicament, though. Should Wikipedia report what “reliable” sources dictate even though there exists archival evidence that disproves each claim? Should this occur even if tens of thousands of people of every gender, race, and religion are being falsely accused of being misogynists and harassers for it?
