- This article is a sandbox of the (soon-to-be former) article Tyrael. I plan on reorganizing the article.
Tyrael, an archangel, is one of the main characters seen in the popular game Diablo II. He is depicted as an angel whose face is hidden by the darkness of his hood and never revealed throughout the game. He has large tendril-like white-glowing wings and is garbed in brown and gold robes. (In the game's various cinematic sequences, he is also at times depicted wearing armor over his robes.)
Tyrael is one of only three named angels shown in the game; Hadriel is found in the River of Flame, in Act IV, on the player's path to destroy Diablo, and Izual is a former (corrupted) archangel.
Tyrael's Role in the Mythos
[edit]Tyrael (pronounced "Tier-ial," as Marius enunciates in the cutscene "Terror's End.") comes from the High Heavens and serves "The Light", the forces of good in the Diablo universe. It is unknown who his superiors are; no gods or higher angels are ever named. Judging from Deckard Cain's description, Tyrael seems to be regarded as something of a rogue by the forces of Heaven, as he seems to intervene in the affairs of mankind more frequently than is considered appropriate. This would seem to explain Tyrael's greater sociability, compared to Hadriel, as well as his willingness to single-handedly engage one of the Prime Evils directly.
The manual for the original Diablo game establishes that Tyrael was the patron of the Horadrim several centuries prior to the games, during the Sin War. He united mages, warriors, and other typically dysfunctional factions into a single force dedicated to binding the Prime Evils.
Tyrael wields a magical sword that some believe to be Azurewrath, the blessed blade forged to combat the demonic Shadowfang. It is unknown if Tyrael's sword is indeed Azurewrath, but he surely had a hand in its creation and his ill-fated Lieutenant, Izual, carried it in battle against the forces of Hell during the Sin War.
Other
[edit]Tyrael can also be found in World of Warcraft as a vanity pet. He is only available to those who obtained a special code from the 2008 WWI Convention.
