Stephanie Temma Hier Stephanie Temma Hier (born in 1992 in Toronto, Ontario) is a painter and sculptor who lives and works in Brookyln, New York[1]. She holds a BFA from the Ontario College of Art and Design University, Toronto, and studied at the Academy of Art Canada, Toronto[2].
Work Having trained since the age of 11 in figurative painting at the Academy of Art Canada in Toronto and studied animation throughout high school, Hier had already honed her technical skills before completing a BFA in painting at OCAD University in 2014[3]. Homages to her classical training reverberate throughout her work in both content and technique. Stephanie Temma Hier's paintings emerge from a multitude of seemingly disjointed sources including pop culture ephemera, stock imagery, temporary tattoos and canonical material[4]. Her practice is a witty exploration of visual culture in the Information Age which reaches out to the very boundaries of painting to create a semiotic language both rich in its use of history, and feather-light in its cheeky use of pop-cultural ephemera.
Exhibitions Stephanie Temma Hier has produced solo and two person shows at Gallery Vacancy (Shanghai), Franz Kaka (Toronto), Y2K Group (New York), David Dale (Glasgow), Downs and Ross (New York), Neochrome Gallery (Turin), Three Four Three Four (New York), Ed. Varie Gallery at NADA (New York) and Johannes Vogt (New York)[5]. Hier has also exhibited internationally at venues such as Antoine Ertaskiran (Montreal), Thierry Goldberg (New York), Plus One Gallery (Antwerp), Anonymous Gallery (Mexico City), Bureau (New York), The Kitchen (New York), Museo della Frutta (Turin), The Power Plant (Toronto), Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto). Hier is the recipient of multiple grants from Canada Council for the Arts, the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation and has participated in residencies at Hospitalfield (Scotland), Shandaken: Stormking (New York) and Salon Nino Mier (Cologne). Hier was also a finalist for the RBC Painting competition in 2016 and 2018 [6].
