Aiton Court [1]is modernenist apartment block designed by Angus Stewart and Bernard Cooke in the mid 1930s. [2]These flats were one of many examples of new architecture that was influenced by Le Corbusier[3] and classified as part of Le Groupe Transvaal.[4]

Built in Hillbrow, Aiton Court is constructed from building materials that were cheap and easily available. There block has an entrance foyer and above the four story building is a rooftop courtyard, the flats are either one or single bedrooms.[5]. Two parallel building blocks, the back, seven stories in height and the front four stories, are separated by a courtyard and fit onto a 15,5 x 31m property.

Under apartheid, political exiles used to live secretly in these apartments. These flats are noteworthy for being one of the first residential buildings in central Johannesburg to push back on the group areas act.
