You deleted several oxymora on 4 Feb. While maybe some of the ones you deleted indeed aren't oxymora, you otherwise seem to have gone through deleting stuff at random. Would you care to explain your changes? -- Smjg 13:40, 14 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- What I deleted were things which by any but the most suspect definition were not oxymorons. If I had any doubt whatsoever, I left it. I gave the benefit of the doubt where I could. If you have issues with what I deleted, feel free to reinsert it. Denni☯ 01:58, 2005 Feb 15 (UTC)

Mass killings
[edit]If the page is about Mathew White, then it should be on a biography page. The generally accepted term is "mass killings". I've added Milton Leitenberg's estimate (Cornell University and CSIS) and more background in the field. Remember that authors are responsible for NPOV, and that means covering work in the field broadly and in proportion to its representation. Stirling Newberry 03:54, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Your personal insult is not appreciated. You admitted the page was to Push White's POV. "Mass Killings" is the commonly used term. Stirling Newberry 01:51, 25 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Cease the personal insults. Stirling Newberry 05:04, 25 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Hi Denni. You might want to check out SN's edits to the global warming page, and/or his comments at (and the rest of) Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/JonGwynne.
I've attempted to fix the overexposure problem. If it is now satisfactory, please consider changing your vote. Thanks. -- BRIAN0918 07:10, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I've added some comments for you to consider. Please see the article. -- BRIAN0918 18:36, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)
your myg0t vote
[edit]You voted at Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Myg0t in the new vote, but the voting was switched to Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Myg0t (2nd nomination). Since you voted a short time after the switch, perhaps this was due to caching in your browser, so I cut and pasted your vote into the new page. If this is not what you wanted, let me know and I will remove it (or you can remove it yourself). -- Curps 03:09, 9 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I emptied and deleted Category:Nonagenarians according to Wikipedia:Categories for deletion. There's an archive of the discussion at Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Category:Nonagenarians. I merged some of the contents with Nonagenarian, but I think that article is really supposed to only list living nonagenarians (otherwise it seems an overly broad category, especially today). If you disagree, you are welcome to add him to the list. -Aranel ("Sarah") 23:16, 10 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Hi, could I ask you to explain your comment on WP:FPC regarding my photograph of the Treasury of Athens. You said that the geometry wasn't good and that it needed "photoshopping". Can you explain how you meant. Cheers, Smoddy (t) (e) (g) 14:30, 12 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- I was using a 50mm lens on a Yashica FX-D from 1983. If I recall correctly, it was at f16 and 250ms. If it does need correcting, please feel free to do that. I am afraid I am strongly of the opinion that it is as good as many of the featured pictures, and would like to see it promoted. So, if you can make it look better, be my guest. Smoddy (tgec) 19:45, 12 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Looks nice, yes. One suggestion – might it be easier to crop off a fairly large section of the bottom of the page? While I'm here, I do notice that the image has become more pixellated – is this just to keep the filesize down temporarily? Cheers, and thanks, Smoddy (tgec) 19:55, 12 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, my camera, clearly, is film. This picture is from a Photo CD rendering. I can attempt to scan it in at a higher resolution (is currently 1.6 megapixels) if that would be helpful (as you can see, my digital editing skills are less than brilliant!). Thank you – I agree, the colours are particularly beautiful. And thank you also for your help! Smoddy (tgec) 20:08, 12 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Geostrophic wind
[edit]Hi Denni,
I added a comment on the talk:Wind page. There is a passage in the Wind article that I think is muddled. Please have a look. I wrote most of the current article on the coriolis effect. In writing the coriolis effect explanation, I aimed as much as possible to facillitate understanding of wind dynamics.
Possibly the current coriolis effect article is a bit to much in-depth for a wikipedia article, but it's really cool physics, so I went ahead anyway. --Cleon Teunissen | Talk 20:24, 13 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Hi Denni, I discovered I may have had a wrong definition of geostrophic wind in mind. Currently, I'm relying on the information on the following site: Balanced flow tutorial by Ryan Turkington
Also it appears that different meteorologists use different definitions of coriolis force, so the reader must check out the mathematical formulas to infer which version of coriolis force is in use. --Cleon Teunissen | Talk 14:04, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- I wish I could provide you my sources for the geostropic wind component of the wind article, but it's been some time since I wrote it, and I have no idea where I got the information (save that it was from a reliable source). Please do not hesitate to make corrections as you see fit. One of the great things about Wikipedia is that you can fine-tune the work of others, and if you find the explanation I provided muddled, I will not be offended if you can improve it. Denni 21:54, 2005 Mar 14 (UTC)
I will edit the section on synoptic winds. My background is physics, so the physics of what I write will be correct, but I may be unaware of certain conventions or definitions in meteorology.
Your source must use rather idiosyncratic definitions. In physics centripetal force is the centerdirected force that maintains circular motion. In (roughly) circular airflows around a low pressure area the pressure gradient force provides the centripetal force that is necessary to maintain the circular motion. In all three: geostrophic, gradient and cyclostrophic wind it is the pressure gradient force that provides the centripetal force.
I'm unsure what to make of 'long straght isobars'. For linear motion of air you need the situation that the force is at an angle with respect to the direction of motion. The isobar would have to move sideways as fast as the velocity of the wind. --Cleon Teunissen | Talk 11:53, 15 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Hi Denni, That photo would look good on the Canadair CL-215 page. Could it be shrunk a bit, eight MBytes as it is. Meggar 05:24, 2005 Mar 16 (UTC)
long straight isobars
[edit]...are what would occur on a non-rotating sphere, as my source has it (and which makes sense to me). Denni 23:46, 2005 Mar 15 (UTC)
- I think that in the case of isobars it is not helpful to refer to what would occur on a non-rotating sphere. In the case of very small circular currents, like dust devils and somewhat larger, where influence of the coriolis effect is negligable, the rotation of Earth is unnoticable. But above a certain size range the direction of the circular flow is determined by the coriolis effect, illustrating that above that size range the atmospheric dynamics of a rotating and a non-rotating sphere are incomparable.
- William M Connolley wrote on the Talk:wind page that the geostrophic approximaton is applicable only when the isobars are parallel to latitude circles. Usually, he writes, the contributors coriolis effect and centrifugal force must both be taken into account, (but the two cannot simply be added, I infer that a weighed average of the two must be used).
- Anyway, William has reverted my changes, arguing that the dynamics was being discussed too much in-depth for the scope of the article, and I decided to go along with that. It leaves an editorial dilemma, I think. Should it be mentioned at all that meteorologists take both coriolis effect and centrifugal force into account? What does that information add if it's not explained to the reader how different these forces are? As William wrote, currently the sections 'synoptic wind' and 'winds defined by an equilibrium' overlap in what they present. Maybe the two sections should be merged. --Cleon Teunissen | Talk 09:55, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Louis Riel
[edit]Hi Denni, thanks for your kind words about my contributions so far to the Louis Riel article. I just wanted to let you know what my plans are for the Peer Review... I intend to finish going through and rewriting all of the LR article, with a fairly high level of detail. It will take a bit more time than I originally thought. The only problem is that this will probably swing the pendulum too far the other way, and the article will grow too large. My intention is that once I finish with LR, I will spin off bits that don't seem directly relevant to LR to Red River Rebellion and North-West Rebellion, and try and bring these articles to a higher standard as well. User:JamesTeterenko has also agreed to work on really buffing out the trial section, and much of this will eventually be spun off to Trial of Louis Riel. In anycase, the main LR article may become a bit bloated for awhile, but this will be addressed later. Just wanted to let you know. Cheers, Fawcett5 14:39, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Hi again. Re the [[Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Swastika|FAC for this article. Perhaps you could make your vote clear, now that I have rewritten the intro. Cheers, Smoddy (tgeck) 23:47, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Armenian Genocide entry in Holocaust (disambiguation)
[edit]This a very sensative article, Both sides are placing conclusions throughout wikipedia, its disputed however. The artcile itself should be only thing making conclusions. --Cool Cat My Talk 04:16, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Denni, don't bother Coolcat, if he vandalise those articles, just revert them. He's been doing this in every articles involving Turkey, and he is trying to get me banned by reporting me to other members talk page. As I said, more time passes, and more clearer his intentions will be. And now with his edits at Holocaust (disambiguation), he will just have more people on his back being more careful about him. Fadix 19:50, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Yes but Armenian Genocide is disputed. Neither you and I can determine the facts. A misleading pro genocide claim is not open minded wikipedia material when there is significant oposition.
- As I said, it is the second most studied genocide, when the ratio of recognition vs denial is hundreds or thousand to one among Western Academics, one can hardly call it "significant opposition." There is no misleading "pro" genocide claim. There is a misleading you on Wikipedia. Fadix 20:14, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Look at my edit carefully, I am not denying the genocide. I am merely rewprding it so there is a level of uncertanty. Do you understand where I am standing? Fadix, you cant prove genocide on wikipedia your "second most studied genocide" "most academia thiks this" is just hot air --Cool Cat My Talk 21:08, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Your edit is vandalism. Your login should be locked in every entries of genocides and Turkey for the sake of Wikipedians. Fadix 21:12, 27 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Please read Wikipedia:Vandalism and youll se what is NOT vandalism.
I am suspending my suggestion untill the article Armenian genocide is clarified.

Small request
[edit]Hi Denni! I was very pleased with the enhancements you made to my pic of the Valencia Hemispheric, and I wondered if you could help me in a similar way with the image that you see here, which I'm currently using to illustrate my Spring Heeled Jack article. It happens to be going thru FAC right now, and I wouldn't like to see its chances decreased due too the poor quality of this image. As you see, it appears to be too dark. If you could please enhance it a bit, something that I cannot do due to my lack of expertise in the matter, I'd be extremely thankful. Thank you for your time! :) -- Shauri 23:46, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Louis Riel, redux
[edit]Hi again Denni. I just wanted to know that I think I have more-or-less accomplished what I aimed to do with Louis Riel during the peer review. The size is now back down to about 41kb after ballooning to 50+ when I was writing the RRR section. So when you have a chance, please give it a careful once-over, and consider whether you would like to renominate it for FAC. Of course, there is still room for improvement - the Trial of Louis Riel sub-article is unfinished, and North-West Rebellion is still in woeful shape. But one article at a time! Red River Rebellion I think I can get to near FAC status in a couple more days, I just need to rewrite the lead paragraph, add a couple of things here and there, and merge back some information from the old article that existed there before I moved so much stuff there from Louis Riel. I would appreciate your opinion on ways to improve that one as well. Regards, Fawcett5 04:17, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Alberta article
[edit]Yes, I have lived in Alberta all my 38 years (mostly Edmonton), except for my 17 months in Montreal. I'll admit I get a little uptight about spelling sometimes--I must remember to take a deep breath. For non-Canadian articles, I leave spelling as is or make as few changes as necessary to make the article uniformly en-GB or en-US, but for Canadian articles I try to use the Canadian Oxford's first-listed spellings. Crash test dummy references
[edit]Thanks for your response. So if you have in fact used all of those listed as references, just call the whole section references, and format the external links as at Wikipedia:Cite sources. If you don't have the time to do that, let me know and I will do it. The problem with an "External links and references" section is that could mean two references and ten external links that are not really references. By your comment I hope you don't think WP:FAC is the wild wild west or something. It's just there are so many great articles and referencing is so important, that we have standardized on it. In any case Crash test dummy looks like it would be a shoe in if nominated now anyway. Thanks again. - Taxman 13:35, Apr 23, 2005 (UTC)

Why did you remove the delete tag from this article? It's incoherent nonsense. Isn't that what the delete tag is for? Crotalus horridus 02:31, 21 May 2005 (UTC)
- It is =not= incoherent nonsense. Yes, it's nonsense, but according to the guidelines for speedy deletion, incoherent nonsense is along the lines of "shm-la-la apundigo nreeeeeee to Pougkeepsie." This article is not speedy deletable, and must go through VfD, unfortunately.
- I think it qualified as patent nonsense "Content that, while apparently meaningful after a fashion, is so completely and irremediably confused that no intelligent person can be expected to try to make heads or tails of it." However, since you disputed the deletion, I have undeleted and re-listed it for VfD. PS: I don't usually check other User_talk: pages (so that I don't have to monitor a whole long list of User_Talk: pages - one for each person with whom I am having a "conversation"), so please leave any messages for me on my talk page (above); if you leave a message for me here I probably will not see it. I know not everyone uses this style (they would rather keep all the text of a thread in one place), but I simply can't monitor all the User_talk: pages I leave messages on. Thanks!
- Well, I was actually interested if you had some actual use for it, i.e. a reason past general "why not keep it?" [edit]does your link to posting a question lead to another page than this one? Are you a multi-named one? But my real question is the one I posted on the other page, to which I did not get a response. Why did you remove the delete notice on my redundant Roti Canai article? I have corrected the bad link that led me to creating it, no one else has edited it yet, I have the information saved to put on the good article page, and Cyrius can't be serious if he thinks anyone is actually going to learn something from my idiocy. Please respond. The article is like a flea in my ear, which, if you've experienced this, is maddening. --Mothperson 11:45, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I was following advice from the help desk. I had idiotically not followed through on a red non-link for Roti Canai, when there was a perfectly wonderful Roti canai article. I'm sort of new here (March) and I didn't realize article names were case-sensitive. So, because there was a red non-link for Roti Canai in the Breakfast article I've been editing, I assumed, stupidly, that there was no article, and I started one. Can this be put back on the speedy delete, given what I've told you? --Mothperson 00:58, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Deaths in 2005/January
[edit]<Jun-Dai 1 July 2005 23:03 (UTC)>
- As you say, I'll put it through the normal deletion process. I guess I just assumed that there was a criterion for speedy deletion that corresponded to pages that the creator created in error and no one else had edited yet. I made the page (it's a copy of Deaths in January 2005, btw) having forgotten that it can't be sucked in through {{/January}} the way that articles under Wikipedia: can. Additionally, while I was figuring that out, I discovered that in a couple of places in the (inconsistent) Wikipedia style/policy pages it is mentioned that subpages shouldn't be used for anything other than proposed changes. I don't really agree, but I felt I should go along with it.
