Austin Rains Born: Vancouver, Washington, United States Occupation: Educator, Geoscientist Known For: Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, Education Early Life and Education Austin Rains is an American geoscientist and educator based in Vancouver, Washington. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Geological and Earth Sciences from the University of Washington in 2016. Following his undergraduate studies, he pursued a Master of Science in Applied Geosciences at the University of Washington, graduating in 2019. Rains furthered his qualifications with a Master’s in Secondary Education and Teaching from Washington State University Vancouver in 2020. Career Rains began his career with volunteer roles that combined his interests in geology and environmental science. He worked as a Volunteer Scientist at Mount Rainier National Park (2018–2019) and a Volunteer Staff member with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at the Cascades Volcano Observatory from 2017 to 2018. His responsibilities included supporting research, performing fieldwork, and monitoring environmental data, particularly in hydrology. In education, Rains serves as a Long Term Substitute Teacher at the Washougal School District in Washougal, Washington, a role he has held since April 2020. He also gained classroom experience as a Student Teacher at Covington Middle School in the Evergreen School District. Interests and Specializations Rains has shown a keen interest in geology, particularly in hillslope geomorphology, volcanic processes, and geotechnical engineering. He is proficient in using ArcGIS for geospatial analysis and mapping, supporting his geoscience work. Additional Roles In addition to his roles in science and education, Rains has experience in coaching, having worked as a Wrestling Coach for Evergreen Public Schools (2013–2014).
