DeHypnotist is a handle used by Roger A. Straus, Ph.D., author of Strategic Self-Hypnosis, Creative Self-Hypnosis, Using Sociology: An Introduction From the Applied and Clinical Perspectives (3rd Edition), and co-author with the late Nathan Hurvitz of Marriage and Family Therapy: The Sociocognitive Approach. Straus received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, Davis in 1977. As a graduate student, he helped to develop the "activist" paradigm for religious conversion and gained international acclaim for his work on new religious movements. He was a co-founder of the Clinical Sociology Association (now merged into the Association for Applied and Clinical Sociology) in 1978 and had a clinical sociology practice for several years (1976-82). Straus has published well over a dozen papers in sociological and other professional journals, professional and text books, as well as two "trade" self-help books presenting a symbolic interactionist approach to hypnosis and self-hypnosis. He was on faculty at Alfred University (1983-1986) and since then has worked as a marketing research consultant for several major consultancies and, since moving to Portland, Oregon in late 2006, as an independent practitioner. That's his day job. When he was at Alfred, his courses on the social history of rock and roll and studies of the Dr. Who tv programme were a big hit with students but incurred the wrath of the powers that be by really teaching about popular culture, not just putting it down. Since he was at Antioch College in the mid-60s, he has been fascinated by a wide range of music, from the San Francisco groups through the Fugs, the Bonzo Dog Band and British rock-folk, country blues and other traditional music. However, he has long had a special place in his heart for the progenitors of "alt-folk," the Holy Modal Rounders and the musical family around them, including Michael Hurley and Jeffrey Frederic. Since marrying Kathryn Frederick, Jeff's widow, in 2005, he has become part of that family and has been helping her with her record labels, Frederick Productions and Red Newt Records that specialize in the music of this network as well as other good-time Americana.
