Willem de Rooij (born 1969 in Beverwijk, Holland) is an artist working in a variety of media, including film and installation.

Biography

Willem de Rooij studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Akademie in Amsterdam from 1990-95 and at the Rijksakademie there from 1997-98. He worked in collaboration with Jeroen de Rijke (born 1970 in Brouwenshaven, Holland, died in 2006) from 1995 to 2006. Together with Jeroen de Rijke he mounted major exhibitions at K 21, Düsseldorf in 2007 and at the Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna in 2008. He is a professor of art at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main, Germany since 2006 and a professor at the De Ateliers in Amsterdam since 2002. De Rooij has often included in his exhibitions the work of other artists. For example, when his film Mandarin Ducks was shown at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam an additional installation of objects and artworks from the Museums' collection was shown. In 2007 de Rooij made two exhibitions where he included the work of artists Isa Genzken, Karen Cytter and designer Fong-Leng, at Galerie Chantel Crousel in Paris called "The Floating Feather" and at Galerie Daniel Buchholz in Cologne "Birds in a Park".

Describing de Rijke/de Rooij in a introduction to a portfolio of their work published in Artforum in 2008, art historian Pamela M. Lee states that in their work they trace "the recursive economy of the image: its affective power, its capacity to seduce and organize perception, and its mediation of time and subjectivity." In 2010, Willem de Rooij opened an exhibition titled Intolerance at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. Speaking to Dieter Roelstraete in an interview published in the journal Afterall, de Rooij has said, "The very notion of 'representing', of 'imaging', is what my work is most deeply concerned with."
