Using his patented tunnelling shield, Marc Brunel begins construction of the Thames Tunnel under the River Thames between Wapping and Rotherhithe. Progress is slow and will be halted a number of times before the tunnel is completed.

8 February: London and Greenwich Railway opens between Deptford and Spa Road, Bermondsey, the first steam railway line in London.

10 October: London and Greenwich Railway extends from Spa Road, Bermondsey to temporary terminus near London Bridge.

1 July: The Royal Commission on Metropolitan Railway Termini recommends a demarcating a limit around the central area of London within which no new railway lines should be constructed.

28 February: Following objections to the government's proposal to develop Stansted as London's third airport, the government announces a commission will review options and sites for development.

5 April: RAF fighter pilot Alan Pollock flys a Hawker Hunter jet below the upper span of Tower Bridge as part of a protest that the 50th anniversary of the founding of the RAF had not been celebrated.

8 April: A fire on a BOAC passenger plane following an emergency landing kills 5. Stewardess Barbara Jane Harrison is posthumously awarded the George Cross for heroism.

15 April: Erected in 1963 to enable the construction of the Underground station concourse below the road junction, the Oxford Circus Umbrella road deck is removed.
