She studied French language and Classics at the University OF Exeter. Afterwards she worked for Amnesty international in London. During this time she worked on two novels for adults, but however were never published and later destroyed.
During a course travel from Manchester in 1990 to London she invented the charactor Harry Potter, after she read the Comic "Books OF Magic" by Neil Gaiman. From the outset, she says she has known that it will be a seven books series about a juvenile wizard, and a boarding school for witches and wizards. In 1991 Rowling went to Portugal, where she worked in the afternoon to English School as a teacher. In this time she worked much on the first of her planned seven Harry Potter books.
In March 1992 she became acquainted with the Portuguese TV journalist Jorge Arantes, which she married on 16 October 1992. The marriage lasted however only briefly. On 27 July 1993 her daughter Jessica was born. Rowling separated with Arantes in the November of the same year. Rowling went back to Great Britain. As a single mother of an infant she lived with social welfare assistance, while continuing work on her first book.
In 1995 she completed volume 1, Harry Potter and the sorceres stone. One year later she signed a contract with the literature agent Christopher Little. After the agency had offered the work to several publishing houses, the publishing house Bloomsbury accepted the manuscript in 1996. The publishing house thought it best to look for job since one could not become rich from childrens books alone. Rowling began a further training course in order to work again as a teacher On 26 June 1997 Harry Potter and the sorcerers stone with a starting edition of 500 copies was published.
Success and Wealth Only three days after the publication of volume 1 the US publishing house Scholastic bought the American publishing rights of Rowlings book at the price of 100,000 dollars. In accordance with Rowlings contract with their agent received it 80 per cent to this sum <---No clue as to the meaning of the sentance. Rowling was suprised that as an unknown childrens book author she was paid so much. The first two volumes (volume 2 Harry Potter and the chamber of the secrets was completed by Rowling already briefly after the first volume was published and appeared 1998) sold well, but only after publication of the third volume (Harry Potter and the prisoner of Askaban, 1999) the public became finally gave Rowling there full attention. In 2001 and 2002 there was published filmings of the first two books by Chris Columbus direction.
On 26 December 2001 Rowling married the physician Neil Murray. Numerous factors - the work on the two benifit for Comic relief (see below), their wedding and finally their second pregnancy (on 23 March 2003 her son David Gordon born) - slowed the work on the fifth volume Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. This appeared finally in June 2003 with still higher starting editions than volume 4. On 23 January 2005 she became a third time nut/mother. It brought a healthy girl in a hospital in Edinburgh to the world, which received the name Mackenzie Jean Rowling Murray. Rowling is considered as one of the richest Mrs. Grossbritanniens, still before queen Elizabeth II. The Forbes of magazines estimated their fortune in the years 2004 to 2006 at 1 billion US dollars (approx. 830 millions Euro). Rowling and the Media
Due to her wealth and popularity is an important person of the public life. She comes up regularly in media reports that inaccuratly report on her life. This is, on one hand, because of the mostly young Harry Potter fans, that have a following around Rowling. Her biography was for a long while based on interviews and with persons she knew in former times. Only in 2004 did J. K. Rowlings web page go on-line, on which she presents her personal record in written form. Besides numerous persons who have had to do with Rowling in the past, most disclaim having a direct or indirect influence on Rowlings work, In Harry Potter and the goblet of fire, Harry emerges as new figure the Reporter (Rita Skeeter), which writes partially diflamatory articles from close to nothing with little output from Harry. However Rowling says, the handling of the press was intended already, but for volume 1. There Rowling painted it, since she saw fit (according to her opinion) better for the fourth volume, when Harry's celebrity status becomes really noticible.
