Response to Peer Review

I think that overall the response to our Peer Review was overall pretty positive. I think that a lot of people really enjoyed the fact that we decided to focus on Hashtags and how they were used on social media. The following are four improvements that our peers focused on that we will definitely consider as we continue to revise our draft.

1) Linking other Wikipedia pages to our article. Because our hashtags have been used in various movements, we will be linking and including more sources. Overall, we will need to provide additional access to information, or resources where individuals can find information about the hashtags.

2) Expanding the use-cases outside of Twitter. Although Twitter was mostly used in the #Resist movement, there was presence of #Resist on other social media sites such as Facebook and Instagram. We did not mention that in our post, and it is something that could definitely be improved.

3) Adding data points. I think that when we originally researched these hashtags, we had a very difficult time accessing data. I think that this "adding more data" goes hand in hand with including more dates. Because there are so many important dates, we were not sure which ones to include and we will definitely have to determine a methodology for selecting specific points.

Article Evaluation

Article: Virtual Communities

I think that mostly everything posted was relevant to the cite. However, I did not understnd the inclusion of Howard Rheingold's study in the posting on virtual communities. I thought that bringing in a study on virtiual communities was irrelevant. Also, this postiting did not post any uncertainty about the study or any points that challenged the potential accuracy of the study. The explanation of the study shows that there are many dangers of social media/virtal communities. However, I wish that there was a study that demonstrated the postitive or beneficial effects of participating in a virtual community. Overall, I think that this page was put together--the links worked, references were accurate for the most part-- however, I think that there could have been more information regarding the positive effects of the virtual community.

Possible Topics

When thinking about different topics related to the course to look at an edit on Wikipedia, I explored the following 5 topics: LeBron James, Mark Cuban, Berkeley 2017 Free Speech Week, Labor Rights, and Google.org. Each of these topics are deeply connected to the context and themes of our course: Social Media and Social Movements. Below I have noted 1-2 items that could be changed about these articles. I address the most compelling posts in the 2nd part of this section.

• LeBron James

One individual commented on the Talk page and mentioned that LeBron James' twitter handle should not be linked to the Wikipedia article. However, I believe that in a Wikipedia, all aspects of an individual's persona should be examined and discussed. I think that there is one major aspect LeBron James' public life that is not included in his page: his political activism. I think that this page should include his recent participation in various social movements.

• Mark Cuban

On the Talk page, there is a lot of discussion about Cuban's political views and encouragement of the teams that he owns to express their beliefs. For example, he encouraged his team to kneel during the national anthem. He has also spoken out frequently and has participated in various social movements via twitter. I think that this should be included in his page as well.

• Berkeley 2017 Free Speech Week

There should be a section on the Free Speech Week Page that discusses the controversy over Free Speech Week at UC Berkeley.

• Labor Rights

When looking through the labor rights talk page, I saw that there was an individual who added something on Migrants rights in the UAE. Perhaps the page should include a section discussing the differences and similarities of migrants rights in various countries. Moreover, I think that there should be a section on social media, or at least a brief summary of social movements for labor rights on the labor rights page.

• Google.org

I wish that there was a section on this wikipedia page that discussed some of Google.org's more controversial donations.

When speaking with Samantha, she clarified the assignment as well as other assignments to edit. Here are three articles that we chose to potentially edit:

• LeBron James

We are definitely going to improve the "Off the Court" section of LeBron James' Wikipedia page. He has participated in a lot of activism, specifically, political activism in the past and we wanted to include that in that section. We would not only discuss the recent comment about Steph Curry not being invited to the White House, but also other social media movements that he has been involved with.

• Mark Cuban

Similar to LeBron James, Mark Cuban is not only known for his business savvy but also for his ability to move the needle in terms of political change in the sports arena. He has spoken out via social media about a variety of topics and is not shy about speaking his mind. After speaking with the group we thought more about adding an "Out of the Boardroom" section to Mark Cuban's page.
