Artifact is a personalized social news aggregator app that uses artificial intelligence to personalize the content for each user. It was launched in January 2023 by Nokto, Inc.[3], a company founded by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, the co-founders of Instagram.[4] The app’s name is a portmanteau of articles, artificial intelligence and fact.[4] It has been described as the TikTok for text

Nokto, Inc. was established on March 3, 2022 as a foreign stock company in California, with its headquarters in San Francisco.[5]

The company's main product, Artifact, was first announced on January 31, 2023, after the team had been working on it for over a year,[6] offering the option to sign up for a waiting list for its private beta[4] and then launching in open beta on February 22, 2023.[7][8]

The Artifact app allows users to personalize their news feed by selecting their topics of interest, such as politics, sports, health, or entertainment. The app's algorithms then curates a personalized feed based on the users reading history and feedback[9], as well as the content and quality of the article.

Additionally, the app allows users to connect their contacts, so they can see articles that are popular among their network, highlighted with a badge.[10] In April, Artifact announced the addition of an artificial intelligence-powered summarization feature, which can create a summary of an article for users.[11] Artifact alows users to comment on any article within the app aswell as up- and downvoting comments and commenting the comments. By based on the reating a user gets he can earn /lose "reputation".

The app has a stats feature that shows users the categories they have read the most, as well as the publishers they have been reading the most.

Users can also access a “Headlines” tab that shows the most popular and relevant news stories of the day. Users can rate articles with a thumbs down to improve the app’s recommendations. Users can also sync their contacts with the app and see what articles are trending among their network.

Artifact uses artificial intelligence to analyze the content and quality of the articles, as well as the reading behavior and feedback of the users. The app aims to provide users with a diverse and balanced selection of news sources and perspectives, while avoiding sensationalism and misinformation.

The App recommends Articles to read in the Feed. The recommendation article is influenced by different factors:

  • Users select Topics of Interest, like Sports, Science and Politics, and the app will show fitting articles acoridingly
  • artifact checks the reading history of the individual user and recommends fitting articles
  • The app will show less articles about topics thumbed down
  • Artifact will check the quality and content of the article and ranks the article accordingly
  • The app allows users to connect their contacts, so they can see articles that are popular among their network, highlighted with a badge.
  • Users can Mark any article as clickbait; when many users do that the article will be shown to less people and will be marked with an badge
    • In June they introduced, that an AI will replace the Titel of as clickbait marked articles.

Reception

Artifact has received positive reviews from critics and users, who praised its simple and intuitive design, its personalized and curated content, and its potential to foster informed and engaged citizens.

However, Artifact has also faced some challenges and limitations. The app currently only offers English-language content, mostly from US-based sources. The app’s creators have stated that they plan to add more languages and sources in the future. Additionally, some users have expressed concerns about privacy and data protection, especially regarding the contact syncing feature.
