Angel therapy is a form of contemporary angel spirituality applied as a form of psychotherapy. It has largely been rejected by psychotherapy specialists.

History

Angel therapy was created by Doreen Virtue.[1] Leaders of angel therapy movement include Diane Cooper, Doreen Virtue, and Maria Zavoe.[2] Courses in Angel therapy have been taught by Doreen Virtue,[3][4][5] Karen Paolino,[6] and Christopher Dilts.[6] Other notable practitioners of angel therapy include Crystal Ra,[7] Manuela Bosco[8] Marta Luise,[2], Lorna Byrne,[2] and Jennifer Buergermeister.[9][a] Gaetano Vivo,[10] Mariana M. Cooper,[11] Rena Huisman,[4] Aimee Rebekah Shea,[12] Judy Ward,[3] and Judy Lekic[5]

Context and content

Angel therapy is part of contemporary angel spirituality.[8] Angel therapy involes developing a relationship with your guardian angel.[13] Angel therapy also usually involves cards used similarly to Tarot Cards.[4][6][14]

Angel therapy is often used alongside other alternative medicine practices.[1][15][16] One study in Finland found that practitioners do not generally self-identify as New Age,[8] although they are often labelled that by others.[17][18][13] Angel therapists often also work as psychics or mediums[13][4][5] Angel healing has sometimes been mixed with elements of Buddhism.[19]

Degrees in angel therapy have been offered by diploma mills.[20]

Angel therapy is sometimes a social practice expressing opposition to perceived overvaluation of work productivity and the medicalization of spiritual ailments.[21]

Scholarly reception

The presence and existence of angels and spirits has not been empirically verified.[19] There have been no studies comparing angel healing to either placebo or other forms of psychotherapy.[19] A panel of 101 experts published in 2006 considered 59 different treatments and ranked angel therapy as the most discredited treatment in the collection.[22] Based on Eisner (2000) and Norcross, Koocher & Garofalo (2006), it continues to appear on lists of therapies to avoid.[23][24]
