Vitellius marched with his Rhine armies towards Rome and got support as emperor from Gaul, Britain and Raetia. In the meanwhile, emperor Galba was killed and Otho was the new emperor in Rome.

Otho invaded Gaul, but couldn't defeat the armies of Vitellius in Gallia Narbonensis. Vitellius invaded Italy and won the Battle of Bedriacum. Otho committed suicide afterwards.

Peace wasn't restored the Roman Empire, because Vespasian declared himself emperor in Syria. The Danube armies declared for Vespasian and marched to Rome. Vitellius asked the Batavians, who had fought for him against Otho at the Battle of Bedriacum, to come to his aid against Vespasian. Instead of helping Vitellius, the Batavians revolted.
