In 49 BC, governor Julius Caesar of Gaul revolts against the Roman Republic and conquers Rome. The newly appointed governer of Gaul, Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus, conquers the Gallic city Massilia.
After conquering Italy, Caesar reconquers Massilia and conquers Spain. An attempt to conquer Africa is unsuccessful.
Caesar defeats Pompey in Greece and Illyria in 48 BC. Only Africa remains out of the control of Caesar.
In 47 BC Caesar intervened in a civil war in the Roman vassal state Egypt, and had to deal with an attack by Pharnaces II of Pontus in the Roman vassal states in the Black Sea area. In 46 BC Caesar conquered Africa and defeated king Juba I of Numidia. Numidia was incorporated within the Roman Empire as Africa Nova. In 45 BC there was a revolt in Spain. In 44 BC, Julius Caesar was murdered by a conspiracy of senators.
