Gordian III was a 13 year old boy, when Maximinus Thrax died. He became Roman emperor ext to Pupienus and Balbinus were very impopular with the population in Rome. The Praetorian Guard killed both Pupienus and Balbinus, making Gordian III sole emperor.

Gordian III had to deal with a Persian invasion of king Ardashir I, who had conquered Roman Mesopotamia and eastern Syria. The Carpi were repulsed by governor Tullius Menophilus of Moesia Inferior, who decided to pay them tribute in order to prevent further attacks on the Roman Empire. Governor Sabinianus of Africa revolted in 240, and was defeated by the governor of Mauretania.
