While Constantine I was fighting the Franks in Northern Gaul in 310, Maximian commanded Constantine's troops in Southern Gaul, against his own son Maxentius. He revolted against Constantine and declared himself emperor. The Romano-Gallic troops kept on supporting Constantine however, and Maximian tried to flee. Constantine hastily moved south and encountered Maximian in Massilia, where the local population opened the gates. Maximian was captured and was forced to commit suicide.

In the winter of 311-312, Constantine allied with Licinius. Maxentius allied with Maximinus Daia in response. In 312, Constantine attacked Italy and defeated Maxentius at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge. Constantine allied with the Christians, by becoming a christian himself.
