The 1986 Peters State League was the basketball competition run by the Western Australian Basketball Federation (WABF) in 1986. The "State League" ran for the first time in 1986 following a rebranding of the District Competition by the WABF. The 1986 Peters State League consisted of nine grades: A Men, A Women, B Men, B Women, U/20 Men, U/18 Men, U/18 Women, U/16 Men, and U/16 Women.[1] The A-Grade season ended with Wanneroo claiming both the mens and womens championships.

- The "State League" will be run for the first time in 1986. It will exhibit many changes from the old District Basketball format.
- The State League is the competition, run by the W.A.B.F. for the most elite players in the State, i.e. changes have been made so that semi-social players are encouraged to play in metropolitan or domestic competitions and that the cream of players is encouraged to compete in the State League.
- It is also important to note that this elite competition is no longer a "closed shop". At present, the State League consists of eight major associations. In future years, other associations who achieve such status and who have taken the responsibility for the development of the sport within their area, will join the State League.
- Another significant change for 1986 is that the A grade men's and women's competitions will be played on Wednesday nights thus removing them from the other grades of competition and from the influence of the N.B.L. homes games. This change coupled with a 50% increase in the home and away nature of the competition will allow local stadiums to more easily promote basketball in their area. The Wednesday night spectaculars are eagerly awaited in the suburbs.
- The competition itself is expected to be fierce, many association have recruited well and many strong junior programmes are beginning to show reward.
- I take this opportunity to congratulate and thank the members of my operations committee (notably Association Presidents) for their positive attitudes and the amount of decision making that was completed in the off-season. I wish all associations the best of luck in the State League competition and continued progress within the development of their Association.

[edit]The finals series for B-Grade, U/20, U/18 and U/16 took place over three weekends, with the Semi Finals on 21 September, Preliminary Finals on 28 September, and Grand Finals on 5 October. The A-Grade finals took place over four dates, with games held on 21 September, 28 September, 10 October, and 11 October.[1]
