September
[edit]- Billy Sharp returned to Glanford Park with his new team, Sheffield United, who lost 3-2 in the Iron's second home match of the season. Andy Crosby and Jim Goodwin's performances earned them a place in the Championship side of the week[3], and this victory won the League Managers Association Performance of the Week award[4].
- The Iron then endured first their match without scoring a goal since 1 January 2007 when they were defeated 2-0 by Barnsley[5] - although Marcus Williams did score an own goal.
- The fee for Paul Hayes was decided between the chairmen of Scunthorpe and Barnsley in advance of the scheduled tribunal[6]. It was also announced that the tribunal for Martin Paterson's fee was to be postponed.
- Former player Jack Haigh passed away. He scored 65 goals for the Iron between 1952 and 1959[7].
- The Iron beat Preston 2-1 at home with Joe Murphy saving a penalty[8]. This continued Scunthorpe's 100% home record, stretching back to December 15 2006. This led Nigel Adkins to dub the ground as "Fortress Glanford Park" in post match interviews[9].
- This run did not continue as the Iron lost their next fixture against West Bromwich Albion during which captain Andy Crosby picked up a thigh injury[10], after scoring his third goal in three matches.
- New signing Alex Morfaw had exploratory surgery to uncover the full extent of his ankle injury [11] and was expected to be out for six to eight weeks[12].
- Millwall striker Ben May was signed on a three-month emergency loan[13] and he made his debut as a substitute in the team's first away win of the season against Colchester[14]. The game also featured a first start for on-loan Jack Cork who, along with Kevan Hurst, made it into the Championship team of the week[15]
.
October
[edit]- The Iron started the month with a valuable draw against Norwich City F.C with Andy Crosby returning from injury.
- Despite a return to fitness, striker Daniel McBreen went to York City for a one month loan on the 4th October[16] citing limited chances in the first team as part of his decision.
- Nigel Adkins was interviewed by the Daily Mail in which he stated that the team has the smallest budget in the Championship[17].
