Sidney Louis Geist (April 11, 1914–October 15, 2005) was an American sculptor, teacher, art critic, and art historian. A member of the New York School, his primary sculptural media were wood and stone; he worked in clay, plaster, and mixed media, as well. His sculptures are characteristically colored, often brightly so. From the 1940s through the 2000s, he carved tall wooden sculptures inspired in part by the totem poles of the Pacific Northwest. While some of his sculptures are entirely abstract, others are more or less representational, many of them based on the female form. He also painted, drew extensively—often in a calligraphic style—and made boldly hued collages. A founder of the New York Studio School, he taught sculpture there and at Vassar College for many years.
