Civil Rights Work
[edit]Sala Udin has been an activist with the SNCC,NAACP,SCLC.
Sala Udin went south with the freedom riders.(rocky mountain news) During the 1960's, Udin worked in Holmes County, Mississppi for the benefit of the Civil Rights Movement.Udin rallied for school desegregation, farmer cooperatives, voter registration, and Head Start.(oral history) While in Mississippi, Udin was subject to arrests and beatings.(freedom corner pdf or crdl)
Upon returning to Pittsburgh Udin became involved with Pittsburgh's Black Conciousness/Black Power movement and helped to establish a branch of the Congress of African People.(freedom corner pdf).
Udin also campaigned for the contruction of the Freedom Corner Monument located in Pittsburgh's Hill District and the founded the Freedom Corner Committee of which he holds the general chair.
