From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kentucky Derby (beer game) is a game in which 2 teams consisting of 2 players, attempt to eliminate their opponent by throwing a ping-pong ball into their own cup. Each cup of beer is filled 1/4 to 1/3 full. Once a cup is made, it is passed to your opponent to drink. After they have drank the cup, they must stack it in the center of the table. Once a team has made all of their cups, each player on that team must bounce the ball once into the center stack of cups to end the game. Once a team has won the game, the losing team must consume any beer remaining on the table.

Origin and Name

[edit]

This game was created by Corbin Raines, Casey Hanson, and Tamir Israeli in Las Vegas, NV; 2010. The game is a collaboration of several drinking games. As University of Nevada Las Vegas students, they found themselves bored of the typical drinking games and decided to create one of their own.

The name was derived from the actual Kentucky Derby race, being that the game is a race itself.

Setup

[edit]

Teams

Kentucky Derby is played with 2 teams consisting of 2 players each. Teammates stand directly across from each other, on opposite ends of the table.

Playing Field

Kentucky Derby can be played on any table, although it is generally played on a beer pong table that can either be purchased online or in select stores.

Equipment

Kentucky Derby requires the use of 26 disposable cups such as red Solo Cups. 4 beers are distributed among each teams 12 total cups. on either end of the table is a cup filled with water that is used during the game as a bonus cup that's use is described in the "Game Play" section.

Game Play Each team will begin with one ball. Either player on each team can shoot the first shot. To start the game simply state "go", and begin shooting. Each cup of beer must be made in order from first to last (1-6). Once a cup has been made, the team that made the cup removes the ball, and passes that cup of the beer to their opponent and says "drink" (loud enough for everyone to hear). If a cup is passed to you to drink, you must finish the beer and stack it in the center of the table before either you or your teammate can continue shooting. This is continued until a team has made all of their cups. However, at any point during the game, a player can shoot for the bonus cup. If a player makes the bonus cup, they must take their front cup and add it to the front of their opponents line (opponent on their side of the table).
