In the off-season prior to the 2012–13 season, Ferland was charged with assault and aggravated assault following a bar fight in Cochrane, Alberta.[1] He played the following two seasons under the spectre of the assault charge before going to trial over the summer of 2014. Ferland was acquitted of the charges by a jury which found that he had acted in self-defence after being sucker punched by one of his accusers.[2]
Ferland is among many young junior hockey players that are well representing the Cree nation.[3] With a higher prescence of aboriginals competing in hockey, Ferland is among the youngest Canadian to have earned a spot in the NHL.[4] Currently with the Calary Flames organization, Ferland is looking to have a stellar playoff run with the Flames who hold high hopes for Ferland and his turn around career.[5]
