Tagging and categorizing

[edit]

Surname pages

[edit]

Place the tag {{Surname}} at the bottom of the surname page. This will automatically include the page in Category:Surnames.

Immediately following the {{Surname}} tag, you may add surname language categories as appropriate (e.g., Category:English-language surnames), after first verifying via reliable sources.

Do not place {{Disambiguation}} tags on surname pages.

Talk page

[edit]

Place the {{Anthroponymy}} tag at the top of the Talk page of surname pages. This will include the page within the scope of WP:WikiProject Anthroponymy.

If a surname index article is purely a list, possibly with a brief introductory phrase, then use {{Anthroponymy|class=list|importance=NA}}.

Other name pages

[edit]

Articles about name topics sometimes include a list of people with a surname, such as when the name is also used in other senses (as with Vagner). In such cases, it makes sense to include the article in Category:Surnames, and it is therefore appropriate to place {{Surname}} at the bottom of the page.

Disambiguation pages

[edit]

Do not place {{Surname}} tags on disambiguation pages.

For disambiguation pages that include a list of people with a common surname (see disambiguation pages with surnames), you can place the disambiguation tag on the page using the surname parameter (i.e., {{Disambiguation|surname}}), which will place the disambiguation page in Category:Disambiguation pages with surname-holder lists.
