Bot for Mac!?!?

Hi, Commander! I was wondering about your bot CmdrObot - the page says it's a Mac program. Can you give me some more info? Is it OpenSource? How much Python do I need to know to run it? Anything more than "zero" might be a problem, though I'm proficient in Perl and PHP, so maybe I won't have too much trouble... Hi there. I'm afraid my bot isn't open source, and at the moment it isn't really fit for general consumption: it's got a fairly annoying memory leak, its error handling is a bit lacking, and the user interface could most kindly be described as 'minimal'. Greetings, fellow bot operator

I see that you are listed as a fellow bot operator. I have been regorganising the wikipedia bot help pages to try and provide more information for those who want to learn how to create a bot or have quesitons relating to how to run a bot on wikipedia (more nuts-and-bolts than the existing policy page, which deals with what you are allowed to do, not how you would go about doing it). I've made a start at Wikipedia:Creating_a_bot but could do with any feedback at all. I could do with any programming-language specific information that you can provide as well as any suggestions for improving the article. I'm leaving this same message with 5 other bot operators, to encourage them to pass on the knowledge we have learned developing our bots to the "next generation" of wikipedia bot-builders! All Music Guide

I've been on a long quest to find out allmusic.com's system for identifiers and I ran across a comment your bot made and I was hoping you would be able to help me out. Do you know of anyway of converting the ID they display for an album (for example R381637 for http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:olsqoayaiijn) to a URL that will link directly to that album every time. For example. http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&AMG_Album=R381637 or something. That is just an example and obviously doesn't work, but I'm looking for something along those lines. Thanks. For example, the identifier for The Offspring is 26810 (P26810 actually) and if you make a URL that is http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=27:26810 you can link directly to that artists page. Now I just need to find a way to do this with albums. I tried every number between 1 and 99 behind the colon, and none of them brought me directly to an album page given only the ID. Any ideas? replace "often times" and "oftentimes" with "often"

I am not the operator of AntiVandalBot, but I have to tell you that AVB has been broken for the past month or so, and now only edits the Wikipedia:Introduction page. Phycology/psycology

These are two different words sometimes confused. Phycology is the study od algae. "Phycos" is the Greek from which "Fucus" (Latin) is derived (I understand). Fucus is the generic name for certain big brown algae common on European shores.Osborne 11:23, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi Osborne, thanks for that. You learn something new every day. My bot doesn't have a rule for phycology but it does have one for phycological. Is that what you saw? (What article was it in BTW?) In any event, I'm removing the rule for phycological as I did a search over an entire enwiki dump and every use of phycological was correct. Unicodify

Hi Dmitry. One of the functions of my bot is to turn appropriate HTML entities into UTF-8. The bot just searches the entire article for entities using a regular expression, checks each one to see if it's safe to turn it into UTF-8, and if it is, does so. The bot itself isn't open source at the moment, but I could fairly easily extract the unicodifying code if you need it. Cheers, Cmdrjameson 11:19, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

semiprotection

Hi Auburn,

I have a large number of articles on my watchlist (mostly small Irish towns/villages) that undergo regular vandalism from random IPs. Usually it's idiot school kids saying "this village bites", or "John sucks cock" or other such nonsense. I'm considering requesting that some of them be semi-protected, and I noticed that you've turned down a number of requests on RFPP on the basis that there's an insufficiently high rate of vandalism. As a rule of thumb, approximately how much vandalism do you consider enough to warrant semi-protection?

When deciding whether to protect a page, I look at both the history and logs for the page. In the logs, I check whether or not it has been protected/unprotected recently and whether or not protection was due to vandalism or edit wars. Then I check the history to see what type of vandalism is occurring; is it IP vandals, new user vandals, page move vandals, etc. In general, I expect there to be more than two or three reverts in a given day over an extended period of time. An article like Tesoro High School is a good example. There hasn't been a constructive edit by a registered user since January 25, 2007, but I wouldn't protect this article because there are frequently days and sometimes a week between edits. Also notice some IP users are actually removing the vandalism. Basically, it's a judgement call; there's no real rule of thumb. - auburnpilot talk 03:17, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Warning vandals

Hello. I'm in agreement with the recent revert you made. You may already know about them, but you might find Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace useful. After a revert, these can be placed on the user's talk page to let them know you considered their edit was inappropriate, and also direct new users towards the sandbox. Hi Andrew, which article are you talking about, out of curiosity? I know about the vandalism warning templates, but I tend not to use them for anonymous edits unless there's evidence that the same IP has vandalised a few articles in a short timespan.
