Company History

WTPhelan Insurance Agency was founded in 1898 by William Thomas Phelan, son of William who fled from Ireland in 1842, and Bridget Phelan. Along with older brother John and sisters Maria and Margaret, the Phelan family lived and prospered at Elmwood in Cambridge, MA for more than forty years. Elmwood, built in the 18th century, is one of the most historic homes in America.

William T. Phelan was born at Elmwood on July 20, 1861. He was known for being extremely personable and had an excellent memory for names and faces. Despinte only having a grammar school education, he had a great desire for learning. His eagerness encouraged him to enroll in the evening classes of the Cambridge High School. William would work from 7:00am until 5:00 pm and continue to night class. Unfortunately, it proved to be too much for his health and his principal advised him to give up schooling before he became too ill. His future learning was acquired by reading every book he could lay his hands on- he truly was a self educated man.

The Phelan family eventually moved away from Elmwood in 1884 to a home near Harvard Square. William was respected by many in the community and his advice was constantly sought. He was both a Notary Public and Justice of the Peace, positions more important in those days than now. He rose rapidly in his employment and was successful at a young age. In 1882, William decided to purchase a novelty and newspaper store in Cambridge. Along with this store, he opened a bicycle store, and during his successful venture he was approached by a representative of the Buick Auto Company and was offered an exclusive franchise to sell their cars in the Boston area. He told the man that nothing could ever take the place of a horse and buggy. The same representative then went to William’s bicycle competitor, Alvan Fuller, who accepted the deal and became the largest automobile distributor in New England. William never regreted the decision and always seemed happy in the real estate and insurance business he started in 1898.

William Thomas Phelan had two sons, Joseph and Francis. Joseph went to MIT and became a plant manager for Hoods Milk Company and taught at MIT. Francis, on the other hand, took his father's path and joined his real estate and insurance business in 1928 after graduating from Boston College. William suffered an illness a year later and passed away leaving Francis behind with the company and opportunity to succeed.
