Internet addiction Disorder
[edit]Problematic Internet Use
[edit]Problematic Internt Use is an addictive behaviour, either extreme or poorly controlled fixation, desires, or actions concerning computer use and internet access that may lead to harm or anguish.[1]
For PIU the current hypothesis that individuals’ preference for online, rather than face-to-face, social interaction plays an important role in the development of negative consequences associated with problematic Internet use.[2]
Looking at PIU, the overuse of the Internet leads to adverse health and life consequences (Use table), looking at the PIU theoretical framework on the
side, this indicates the the many consequences. [3]
A study conducted by Scott E. Caplan, suggests that lonely an depressed individuals may develop a preference for online social interaction, which may then lead to negative outcomes with their Internet use.
Stated by Caplan, the term problematic refers to usage reflecting a specific cycle of innate dysfunction leading to Internet use that in turn exacerbates the dysfunction.[4]
From the excessive use of the Internet, specifically for the younger audience, problems can accrue such as:
• Experience depression and/or anxiety
• Could be diagnosed with an ADHD-type illness
• Could be diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome
• Lack of social support from friend and family
• Escaping from problems or stress though the internet
• Being disabled or having mobility impairment
• Having a breakdown with in the family[5]
